The growing role of China in fashion industry

22 Sep 2017

Following the London and New York shows, Milan fashion week kicked off on 20th September. With it came the usual excitement as fashion shows, celebrities and exclusive parties infiltrate the Italian fashion capital.

In both the New York and London weeks, the Chinese presence was increasingly visible. In the British capital, fashion week opened with the news that Chinese tourists are now the biggest spenders in the UK luxury fashion market, accounting for 23% of total sales. In New York, a record 16 Chinese designers presented their 2018 spring/summer collections.

For fashion analysts, the trend is clear: chinese designers are changing the negative perception of "Made in China" to a positive notion of "Designed in China". Their increasingly relevant designs are battling with Iconic European houses to capture the lucrative high-end designer goods consumers in their domestic market.
